Ke "Bale Raos"? Harus itu!

Yogya, Never Ending Asia. I believe it. I lived at that city as a student for almost 5 years, I fall in love to that city. Then I fall in love to one handsome guy from Yogya (so what?). Hmmm, I still love that city until now.

There are never ending stories about the magic of this city. I love Bali too, they have the same unique tradition, but Yogya is different. For me as a Javaness Yogya is better than Bali from the food and beverages aspect. Yogya coulinary is richer and more delicious than Bali. Talking about tradition and coulinary, I must share about this special resto, "Bale Raos".

The tradition centre of Yogya is The Sultan Royal Palace (Kraton Yogya). We can't only find gamelan music or Javanesse traditional dance at Kraton Yogya, but we also can taste the colourfull taste of the Kraton Yogya foods. There is a restaurant named "Bale Raos" inside of the Kraton Yogya. The management used one of joglo (traditional Javaness house) as the resto. It's very gloriously.

As for as I know, Bale Raos is the only resto INSIDE the palace / kraton. There are similar resto AROUND the palace. May be they have the same menu with Bale Raos, but I believe that Bale Raos have the original recipe and formally managed by Kraton Yogya. From http://www.yogyes.com/ and others sources I took Bale Raos authentic menu:

  • Bebek Suwir Suwir (fave of Sultan HB X): Special menu of Kraton Yogyakarta, made from slices of duck meat which is served with fried pineapple slices and rasped kedondong sauce.

  • Semur Piyik (fave of Sultan HB IX): Unique dish made of pigeon.

  • Urip Urip Gulung (fave of Sultan HB VII): Fillet freshwater catfish which is rolled then roasted and served with mangut sauce.

  • Sanggar (fave of Sultan HB VIII - HB X): Original menu from Kraton Yogyakarta, made from sliced beef with the spice flavor, which is roasted with coconut fiber and held by bamboo.

  • Soup Timlo (fave of Sultan HB X): Classic Javanese soup which is the combination of ginger and ketchup, along with various combination of ingredients.

  • Beer Jawa (fave of Sultan HB VIII): Original drink from Kraton Yogyakarta which is made from ginger, secang wood, clove, citrus fruit, etc.

  • Bestik Lidah: The variation of tongue beefsteak with thick sauce, served with pierced potato and serces (a kind of vegetable stoop, favourite food of Sri Sultan HB IX).

  • Bestik Jawa: Grinded beef with sweet gravy served together with potato puree and sauted vegetables.

  • Bebek Ungkep Goreng: Duck dish which is boiled in coconut sugar with spices and fried sweetly.

  • Beer Pletok

  • Manuk nom (fave of Sultan HB VII & VIII): a kind of puding from 'tape ketan' (I don't know how to translate it to english..:))

  • Lontong kikil (fave of Sultan HB X)

  • Prawan Kenes (fave of Sultan HB IX): banana grilled by coconut milk

  • Tapak kucing: banana fried served with cinnamon powder and brown sugar

  • and others delicious and historical foods

Our fave are: lontong kikil, bebek suwir-suwir. We are also crazy about Bale Raos snacks such as: "Prawan Kenes" and "Tapak Kucing". Try it! We also crazy about their beverages such as: "Wedang Adu Limo" (drinks with 5 spices like ginger, javaness sugar, cinnamon etc).
