Baluran Ecolodge & Baluran National Park

This May finally I and fam went to Baluran National Park, stayed at Baluran Ecolodge. Here is my Tripadvisor review of it:

Baluran National Park was already in my agenda since 3 years ago. This April I can managed my business trip to Surabaya so after that I can go to Baluran even the schedule was very tight & exhausting. After all I didn’t regret it at all because of I chose to stay in Baluran Ecolodge.

It’s hard for me to write and to describe about my experience with family this time in the ecotourism of Baluran Ecolodge who was owned and managed by Mr Nurdin Razak. Why? Because it’s a very blasting & impressive for me and my family. Actually for us ecotourism and outdoor activity are very common program, but this program is different with our previous. Two significant factors made us really satisfied with it:

First is Mr Nurdin Razak’s qualification is as good as we read before. He is not only a professional wild life photographer, but also a real idealism person who dedicated his profession for tourism especially ecotourism. As long as we stayed in Baluran Ecolodge, he used native village resources such as workers, foods until the boats.

His mixed combination as a tourism lecture and professional wild life photographer made him as an ideal figure as our “mentor” (I don’t want to use “guide” word because he is far beyond it) in Baluran exploration. He didn't only show Baluran around to us, more than that he brought us to understand deeper about story behind it, hidden environment issues and flied us to see Baluran in the future. It's far beyond our expectation and made us really luck to know him and companied by him.

Second, Baluran Ecolodge itself actually is a home, it's not a hotel because the soul of Baluran Ecolodge is deeper and wider than just a hotel. It's a home for everybody who loves nature & environment. As a house it’s a nice cozy simple building with Javanese village style. It's very homy and natural where the location is in the middle of village so we can hear cows sounds.

We chose 3 days + 2 nights program in Baluran Ecolodge. We had village tours by walking around the village and knew some of their activities such as dairy farm and fish auction. Even we are Indonesian who are quite familiar with those situations, it was nice to have that village tour.

The second day we wake up early in the morning to go to Tabuhan Island using traditional boat. Gosh we got a very glorious sunrise when we arrived at the boat. It was a really really beautiful sunrise with a great scene of boats. Never regret at all to wake up early to have this heavenly sunrise. We need 45 minutes to arrive in Tabuhan Island and along the way we got so many great view, so we were very busy to take pictures :). Tabuhan Island is an empty little tiny island with clear water and white sands. Snorkeling was our main activities in that island and fortunately there were only us in that island. But unfortunately on the way back we were not luck to meet dolphins.

At noon we start our journey to Baluran National Park (I will write about it in a separate review) and we were guided directly by Mr Nurdin Razak. Every minutes of the journey full with surprises of new experiences and educated us deeper about nature and environment in a real world. I still can feel our excitement when we met so many group of butterfly, some buffalo, deer and trekking enter the mangrove forest to find deer skull that was killed and eaten by coyotes (Luck for us because Mr Nurdin Razak recorded this rare killing process by himself). We closed the day by went up to a tower to see a sunset and God bless us to see it. After dark Mr Nurdin Razak gave a bonus to have short safari night along the way to go to the exit gate. Unfortunately we didn’t meet tigers. Yeah that’s the risk of having tour in a real nature not a zoo.

The third day we went back to the National Park by wake up very early in the morning to see sunrise. Gosh, that morning was a heaven for us…..because savanna were belong to us…..only us in the savanna, seeing the rest of sunrise and surprisingly we met a group of coyote! Some peacock also walked gracefully in the savanna. Picture, picture and picture! Almost no selfie because we were lovelorn by the nature, animals and quiet plus peaceful atmosphere that we saw. On the way back to the ecolodge we saw some jungle fowl, some birds with beautiful color and sound, aaaand the special was we met a woodpeckers bird! It was a very nice closing of our tour.

We concluded that actually there are some other choices beside of Baluran Ecolodge to explore Baluran National Park, but only by chosing Baluran Ecolodge we will have a real blasting experience and education. At the end of the program my daughter didn’t want to leave; my heart still stuck with the savanna, woodpeckers, etc; my husband still curious to discuss more with Mr Nurdin Razak. So, we need to come back here again, in dry season to have a different impression :)

Thanks to Mr Nurdin Razak & Baluran Ecolodge that made us had this unforgettable experience. It’s worth to spend quite expensive investment for this tour because we got more beyond a tour program.

So my question for Triadvisor: can I give score more than 5 to this Baluran Ecolodge? :)
